Leg Press Calf Raise
How to do the Leg Press Calf Raise with good form: step-by-step technique, the muscles it works (calves), coaching cues and the mistakes to avoid.
Muscles worked
- Primary
- Calves
How to do it
- Sit on a leg press machine and place only the balls of your feet on the bottom edge of the sled platform, letting your heels hang off the bottom.
- Release the safety handles and press the sled slightly upward so your legs are straight but with a micro-bend in the knees.
- Allow the sled to push back toward you by letting your ankles dorsiflex, dropping your heels to achieve a deep calf stretch.
- Press upward through the balls of your feet as high as possible, extending your ankles completely.
- Hold the top contraction for a one-second squeeze.
- Return slowly to the deep stretch position under control.
Coaching cues
- Press through the balls of the feet
- Full heel drop for maximum stretch
- Lock out ankles at the top
Common mistakes
- Bending and straightening the knees during the press (turning it into a mini leg press)
- Using too much weight, restricting the range of motion
- Bouncing the weight rapidly
Equipment and setup
