Muscles worked
- Primary
- Delts
- Secondary
- Chest
How to do it
- Stand completely upright with your feet shoulder-width apart and your core tightly braced.
- Hold a dumbbell in each hand resting against the front of your thighs with a pronated (overhand) grip.
- Keeping a slight bend in your elbow, raise one dumbbell straight up in front of you.
- Continue raising the weight until your arm is exactly parallel to the floor, at shoulder height.
- Pause for a brief second at the top, squeezing the front of your shoulder.
- Lower the dumbbell slowly and under control back to the starting position.
- Repeat with the opposite arm, alternating sides for the duration of the set.
Coaching cues
- Lift straight forward
- No swinging or leaning back
- Control the descent
Common mistakes
- Swinging the torso backward to generate momentum
- Lifting the weight significantly higher than shoulder level, which removes tension
- Bending the elbows too much, turning it into a curl
